Narrative Structure and Enigma Codes

                                                            Plot Design and Mystery Cues

Narrative structure plays an important role in psychological thrillers because the way information is revealed to the audience helps create tension and curiosity. Unlike action-based genres, psychological thrillers often rely on mystery and gradual revelation rather than immediate conflict.

Roland Barthes’ theory of enigma codes explains how media texts create intrigue by deliberately withholding information. When the audience is presented with unanswered questions, they are encouraged to continue watching in order to resolve the mystery. Many psychological thriller openings rely heavily on this technique.

For example, films such as Se7en and Joker introduce their protagonists without fully explaining their circumstances. Instead, visual clues and subtle behaviour suggest that something is psychologically wrong. This technique allows the audience to actively interpret the narrative.

In my film opening, I plan to use enigma codes by gradually revealing the protagonist’s situation rather than explaining it immediately. The opening will present a seemingly ordinary domestic environment, but small details such as tense body language, uncomfortable silence, and framing will suggest that something is wrong within the family dynamic. This approach will encourage viewers to question the characters’ relationships and remain engaged with the narrative.
